Margaret Anderson Kelliher Statement on Thurman Blevins Shooting

Margaret Anderson Kelliher issued the following statement on the Thuman Blevins shooting:

Last night, our community confronted the reoccurrence of a Minneapolis Police shooting. I first want to extend my condolences to the family of Thurman Blevins. We must do better to de-escalate police and civilian confrontations. That is why I am asking that Mayor Frey not rely only on the BCA investigation but conduct an independent investigation of Mr. Blevins death and the Minneapolis Police Department.

Our community has experienced too many deaths as the result of police shootings. In Congress, I will be a partner to our communities to help them get the training resources they need to change the systemic issues of police and community conflict. I will be a champion for legislation in Congress such as the End Racial Profiling Act and the Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act; each of these pieces of legislation will help to address systemic issues of racial bias, de-escalation training, and standards and help local communities like ours, prevent more tragic and preventable deaths of community members by law enforcement.
